MacBook Neo and MacBook Pro: What Apple’s New Laptops Mean for Music Producers

Apple recently refreshed its MacBook lineup with the release of new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models powered by the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips. These machines focus on high-performance workflows and professional use cases.
At the same time, Apple introduced something very different. The new MacBook Neo, priced at just £599, is now the most affordable MacBook the company has released. Instead of using an M-series processor, it runs on Apple’s A18 chip, the same chip found in the iPhone 16.
The contrast between these two launches raises an interesting question for music producers. How do Apple’s newest entry-level and high-end laptops compare when it comes to music production?
MacBook Neo: A Budget Option for Music Production?
Building a music production setup can become expensive quickly. Between software, plugins, audio interfaces, and studio gear, the computer itself is often one of the largest investments.
Because of that, a £599 MacBook naturally draws attention from beginner producers, hobbyists, and musicians looking for a portable writing machine.
The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of RAM as standard, which meets the minimum recommendation for many digital audio workstations. However, producers working with larger projects often prefer 16GB or more for additional headroom when running multiple tracks and plugins.
Storage is another consideration. The base model includes 256GB of storage, while a 512GB version is available for an additional £100. Since sample libraries, plugins, and project files can quickly consume storage space, many producers would likely rely on external drives.

MacBook Pro M5 Pro: Performance Gains in Logic Pro
While the Neo targets entry-level users, Apple’s new MacBook Pro models focus on higher-performance production environments.
A hands-on test by music creator imamusicmogul on March 9, 2026 evaluated the 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by Apple’s M5 Pro chip using real-world Logic Pro workflows. The tests included AI-assisted features, large track counts, and real-time exports.
Hardware and Connectivity
The 16-inch MacBook Pro M5 Pro ships with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 charging cable, a 140W power adapter, documentation, and a polishing cloth.
Apple continues to include connectivity designed for professional workflows. The laptop features:
Three Thunderbolt 5 ports
HDMI output supporting up to 8K at 60Hz
An SDXC card slot
A 3.5mm high-impedance headphone jack
MagSafe 3 fast charging
Additional upgrades include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 powered by Apple’s N1 chip, a nano-texture Liquid Retina XDR display, and a 12MP webcam with Center Stage.

AI and Neural Engine Performance in Logic Pro
One focus of the testing was Apple’s 16-core Neural Engine, which powers AI-assisted tools in Logic Pro.
Features such as Mastering Assistant, Stem Splitter, and Chord Detect processed almost instantly on the M5 Pro MacBook Pro. Earlier systems like the M1 Max reportedly required more time for the same tasks.
These results show how Apple’s newer chips are helping accelerate AI-assisted music production features within modern DAWs.
CPU Performance and Track Handling
The M5 Pro chip includes an 18-core CPU with 12 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores.
In stress tests that duplicated tracks within large Logic Pro sessions, the system handled around 1,080 tracks before reaching its limit. In comparison, the older M1 Max system reached around 579 tracks in the same test.
Real-time exports were also completed faster, providing more headroom for dense sessions with large track counts and heavy plugin processing.
Built-In Microphone Testing
The MacBook Pro’s internal microphone array was also tested by recording directly into Logic Pro using Quick Sampler.
While external microphones remain standard for professional recordings, the built-in microphones were capable of capturing quick ideas, reference recordings, or sampling without additional equipment.
Upgrade Considerations
For many music production workflows, the M5 Pro provides a balance between CPU performance and memory capacity.
The higher-end M5 Max configuration mainly increases GPU cores and memory bandwidth, which may benefit extremely large projects or video-related workflows.
Apple recommends starting with at least 24GB of unified memory for more demanding production sessions.
