Musicians Face Elevated Hearing Risks: Global Review Highlights Industry-Wide Concern

A newly published systematic review in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery highlights a growing concern across the music industry, showing that musicians experience significantly higher rates of hearing-related conditions compared to the general population.

Overview of the Study

The review examined 67 studies involving more than 28,000 musicians from 21 countries. The research included both recreational and professional musicians across multiple genres, including classical, jazz, and contemporary music. The goal was to better understand how common auditory symptoms are among musicians and how those figures compare to non-musicians.

Key Findings on Hearing Health

The findings show a consistent pattern across the data. Tinnitus, commonly described as ringing in the ears, affects 42.6 percent of musicians, compared to 13.2 percent in the control group. Hearing loss was reported by 25.7 percent of musicians, more than double the 11.6 percent seen in non-musicians. Hyperacusis, or increased sensitivity to sound, impacts 37.3 percent of musicians, compared to 15.3 percent in the general population. Overall, the data indicates that around one in three musicians experience tinnitus or hyperacusis, while roughly one in four report some level of hearing loss.

Low Use of Hearing Protection

Despite the elevated risk, the review found that fewer than half of musicians consistently use hearing protection. Many participants expressed concern about long-term hearing damage, but regular preventative habits, such as wearing protective devices, have not been widely adopted across the industry.

No Genre-Based Differences

The study also found no meaningful difference in hearing risk between genres. Classical musicians and those working in pop or rock environments reported similar levels of auditory issues. This suggests that the risk is more closely tied to sustained exposure to sound rather than the type of music being performed.

Industry Response and Preventative Measures

In response to these concerns, some organizations have started implementing measures to reduce risk. Orchestras in Australia, for example, have introduced the Sottovoce system, a real-time performance monitoring tool designed to help manage sound exposure during rehearsals and live performances. At the same time, industry groups such as the Musicians’ Union continue to promote hearing safety through practical guidance, including the use of custom ear protection, managing sound levels, taking breaks, and scheduling regular hearing checkups.

Shifting Perspectives on Hearing Loss

The perception of hearing damage within the music industry has historically leaned toward acceptance, with many viewing it as an unavoidable part of the profession. However, that mindset appears to be shifting. With increased access to specialized hearing protection and more information available, musicians are beginning to take a more proactive approach to protecting their hearing earlier in their careers.

Takeaway

This large-scale review reinforces a clear trend across the global music community. Hearing-related conditions remain a widespread issue among musicians, and the findings point to a growing need for awareness, consistent preventative measures, and ongoing industry support.
