Cybercriminal Activity Targets Music Industry, FBI Reports $12M in Losses
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning to the music industry following a rise in criminal and cybercriminal activity affecting both professionals and fans. Findings based on complaints submitted to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), along with ongoing investigations, point to consistent patterns in how these schemes are being carried out.
According to officials, these activities have resulted in more than $12 million in reported losses, with threats ranging from financial scams to intellectual property theft.
Identified Tactics and Schemes
Authorities have outlined several methods currently being used to target the industry. Romance scams remain one of the most reported, with criminals impersonating performing artists to build relationships with victims, often targeting individuals over the age of 60.
Cybercriminals have also gained unauthorized access to computers and social media accounts belonging to music professionals. In some cases, these breaches have been followed by extortion attempts, including threats involving stolen personal data or unreleased material.
Another reported scheme involves the use of artificial intelligence to generate music, paired with automated streaming activity, in order to manipulate royalty payment systems on digital platforms.
In a separate case, a former sound engineer allegedly copied unreleased recordings without authorization and later sold them online for financial gain, raising concerns around internal access and content security.
Complaint Data and Financial Impact
Between early 2024 and late 2025, IC3 complaints connected to the music industry came from a wide range of individuals, including artists, managers, producers, label owners, journalists, and fans.
Romance scams accounted for 527 complaints, with total losses reaching $12,281,229. A majority of these reports involved individuals who believed they were communicating with legitimate musicians.
Financial scams tied to professional opportunities also appeared frequently. There were 107 complaints related to non-delivery, advance fee, and overpayment schemes, totaling $777,063 in losses. These cases often involved false offers tied to collaborations, contracts, media coverage, or royalty payments.
Extortion-related incidents were also reported, with 64 complaints describing attempts to obtain money or unreleased music through threats involving personal information or explicit content.
Fans reported 61 cases of non-delivery scams tied to concert tickets, meet-and-greets, and merchandise, totaling $325,574 in losses. In addition, 55 complaints from industry professionals detailed data breaches involving stolen unreleased music or compromised promotional accounts.
Preventative Guidance
Authorities are advising individuals and companies within the music industry to take steps to reduce exposure to these threats. Recommendations include keeping systems and software updated, using strong and unique passphrases across accounts, and enabling multi-factor authentication, particularly for email, backup systems, and remote access tools.
They also emphasize the importance of verifying communications, avoiding unsolicited links or attachments, and carefully reviewing payment requests. Public Wi-Fi usage is identified as another area of risk, with guidance suggesting the use of secure connections or VPN services when handling sensitive activity.
Ongoing Risk Across the Industry
The report reflects a broader pattern of evolving threats tied to digital workflows in the music space. As production, collaboration, and distribution continue to rely on connected systems, both access and ownership remain key areas of vulnerability.
The FBI is encouraging anyone affected by fraud or suspicious activity to report incidents through IC3, providing detailed information to support ongoing investigations.
