More Sleep, Better Performance: New Study Highlights the Link Between Rest and Musical Ability

For years, musicians have treated late nights and long practice sessions as part of the process. Whether it's rehearsing for a performance, finishing a session, or learning difficult material before a deadline, sleep is often the first thing sacrificed. But new research suggests that extra practice at the expense of sleep may actually work against better performance.

A recent study from Hong Kong Baptist University found that musicians who added just 60 to 90 minutes of sleep each night showed measurable improvements in several core musical skills after only one week.

The Study Behind the Findings

The research involved 50 musicians between the ages of 18 and 55, including both music students and professional players. Participants were divided into two groups.

One group continued with their normal sleep routine, while the second group was instructed to extend their sleep by 60 to 90 minutes each night over the course of seven days.

Researchers monitored sleep patterns using wearable tracking devices. By the end of the study, the sleep-extension group averaged an additional 1 hour and 26 minutes of sleep per night.

Throughout the week, participants completed a series of musical tests focused on rhythmic stability, sightreading, and musical memory.

Testing Real Musical Skills

The study was designed to evaluate practical musical performance rather than just theory or technical exercises.

In one test, musicians were given a completely new piece of music with limited preparation time. Later, they were asked to perform the piece from memory. An adjudicator, who did not know which participants belonged to each group, scored performances based on rhythmic accuracy and overall precision.

Participants also completed evaluations connected to mental focus and adaptability, including measurements related to psychological flexibility. Researchers described this trait as being associated with concentration, resilience under pressure, and the ability to adapt in demanding situations.

By the end of the week, the musicians who consistently slept longer showed noticeable improvements across several categories, while the control group saw little change.

Why This Matters for Musicians

The findings reinforce something many artists already experience firsthand: exhaustion impacts performance.

In music culture, pushing through fatigue is often normalized. Long studio sessions, overnight travel, tight deadlines, and hours of rehearsal can easily turn sleep into a lower priority. But this study suggests that recovery may be just as important as repetition when it comes to developing musical ability.

The improvements were not limited to energy levels alone. Researchers observed gains in timing, memory retention, and execution, all skills that directly affect both live and recorded performance.

For professional musicians, composers, producers, and even students preparing for auditions or performances, the results point toward a simple but overlooked factor that could influence consistency and focus.

The Growing Conversation Around Health in Music

Discussions around mental and physical health have become more common across the music industry in recent years. Touring schedules, burnout, and creative fatigue are being talked about more openly than before.

This latest study adds another layer to that conversation by showing how sleep may directly influence musical performance itself, not just overall wellbeing.

While practice remains essential, the research suggests that recovery plays a larger role in musical growth than many people realize.

For musicians balancing creative work with demanding schedules, getting an extra hour of sleep may end up being just as valuable as another hour of rehearsal.
