'Country Roads' Finds New Life as U.S. Soccer Team's Unofficial World Cup Anthem
John Denver's 1971 classic "Take Me Home, Country Roads" has become one of the defining musical moments of the FIFA Club World Cup, emerging as the unofficial anthem of the U.S. men's national soccer team.
Following several tournament victories, players and supporters have remained in the stadium to sing the song together, creating a post-match tradition that has quickly gained attention across social media and international sports coverage. The renewed spotlight has also introduced the decades-old recording to a new generation of listeners, demonstrating how legacy songs continue to play a role in today's live events and entertainment landscape.
FIFA's Matchday Playlist Helped Spark the Tradition
According to reports from The Athletic, FIFA added "Take Me Home, Country Roads" to its selection of post-match music for U.S. matches with the goal of creating a shared moment between players and fans.
The tradition first gained momentum after the U.S. defeated Australia, when the song played throughout the stadium as players celebrated with supporters. Similar scenes followed after the team's victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, with players, coaching staff, and thousands of fans singing together after the final whistle.
American soccer player Midfielder Weston McKennie described the celebrations as an opportunity to connect with supporters, while head coach Mauricio Pochettino also joined the post-match singalong.
Bill Danoff and the John Denver Estate Welcome the Song's Revival
Songwriter Bill Danoff, who co-wrote "Take Me Home, Country Roads" with Taffy Nivert, said he was honored to see the song embraced during the tournament. Speaking with The Associated Press, Danoff said he believed John Denver would have enjoyed seeing the renewed appreciation for the recording.
The John Denver estate also welcomed the resurgence, stating that the song continues to resonate because its message extends beyond any single location. The estate noted that its simple lyrics and familiar chorus have helped make it one of the most recognizable singalong songs in popular music.
A Song With a Story Beyond West Virginia
Although the lyrics famously reference West Virginia, Danoff has previously explained that the original inspiration came during a drive through Maryland while traveling to a family reunion.
Danoff and Nivert initially planned to offer the unfinished composition to Johnny Cash. After hearing the song, John Denver instead chose to record it himself, releasing it in 1971. The recording became one of the biggest hits of his career and has remained a staple across radio, live events, film, television, and sports for more than five decades.
Legacy Songs Continue to Shape Live Events
The renewed attention surrounding "Take Me Home, Country Roads" highlights how catalog recordings continue to find new relevance through major cultural events. More than 50 years after its release, the song remains a recognizable part of live entertainment, connecting audiences across generations through a shared musical experience.
For publishers, songwriters, and rights holders, moments like these demonstrate the lasting value of legacy recordings. Whether through sports, film, television, or live events, established songs continue to reach new audiences and reinforce the enduring role of music in shaping memorable moments.
