Humans Can No Longer Detect AI in Music, Survey Finds
Artificial intelligence is changing the soundscape of modern music faster than most listeners realize. A new global survey from streaming platform Deezer and research firm Ipsos revealed that 97% of participants couldn’t tell the difference between music created by humans and tracks generated entirely by AI. The study asked 9,000 people across eight countries to identify which clips were human-made and which came from algorithms. Almost everyone guessed wrong.
The survey highlights a growing shift in how audiences experience music. While AI-generated tracks continue to evolve in sophistication, human listeners seem to be losing their ability to detect the nuances that once separated man from machine.
Mixed Feelings About the Rise of AI Music
Along with the results came mixed reactions. Over half of respondents said they felt uneasy about not being able to tell AI from real musicians, while 51% believed the rise of artificial intelligence would lead to more low-quality content on streaming platforms. Nearly two-thirds feared it could lead to a loss of creativity in music overall.
Listeners are clearly curious about the technology, but also concerned about how it might impact authenticity, artistry, and the value of human musicianship.

Streaming Platforms Respond
The conversation isn’t staying theoretical. Deezer reports that fully AI-generated uploads have surged throughout 2025, with roughly one in three new tracks on its platform now made entirely by artificial intelligence. The company now receives tens of thousands of AI-made tracks every day and has begun labeling these pieces so users can easily tell what’s generated and what’s human.
Deezer is currently the only major platform systematically tagging AI content. Meanwhile, Spotify and others are discussing voluntary disclosure systems, but consistent policies across the industry haven’t yet been established.
AI Music Hits the Charts
AI music is climbing charts. Earlier this month, a country song titled Walk My Walk by Breaking Rust, an act widely reported to be powered by generative AI, reached the top of Billboard’s digital country sales chart. It marks one of the first times an AI-generated vocal performance has taken the number-one spot in a major genre category.
The milestone shows that AI’s influence isn’t limited to experimental or niche corners of music, it’s starting to compete directly in mainstream markets.
Transparency and the Future of Listening
According to Deezer’s findings, 80% of people surveyed said they want AI-generated tracks clearly labeled. That desire for transparency is becoming central to how streaming services, artists, and listeners navigate this new landscape. As the volume of AI content grows, platforms and rights holders will need to balance innovation with clarity, making sure listeners know exactly what they’re hearing.
The ability to tell human from machine may be fading, but the demand for honesty in how music is presented is only getting stronger.
